Anthropic announced a new feature for its AI chatbot Claude called “Personal Finance,” allowing users to connect their bank and credit card accounts and ask questions about their finances, according to TechCrunch. The feature uses Plaid, a financial technology service that securely connects apps to financial institutions. Users can ask Claude questions like “Where did my money go this month?” and receive breakdowns of their spending across categories such as rent, utilities, food and shopping. Anthropic says the tool has read-only access, meaning Claude cannot move money, make transactions or manage investments.
The feature goes beyond basic spending summaries by analyzing transactions across connected accounts to identify duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that have gradually increased. Users can also ask whether they’re spending more than they earn, compare spending against previous months, calculate interest payments and understand financial concepts such as APR. Claude can even create customized spending charts, payment calendars and financial dashboards. Anthropic says the chatbot can access account balances, credit limits and up to two years of transaction history, but users must connect their accounts themselves through Plaid.
Personal Finance is beginning to roll out in beta this week to Claude’s Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Anthropic says conversations within the Personal Finance hub will not be used to train its AI models, although users should still verify important financial calculations because Claude can make mistakes. The launch puts Claude in direct competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which introduced similar personal finance tools in May. Anthropic’s latest move reflects a broader push to turn AI chatbots into everyday assistants that can handle increasingly practical tasks beyond answering questions and generating content.
